COVERAGE / AUTO

Auto insurance in Florida, explained

Cars on a Florida highway at dusk

Florida's rates are shaped by weather, density and a higher accident rate than most states. A few things actually move the number.

SHOP AROUND

Quotes vary a lot between carriers. Do not take the first.

KNOW THE MINIMUM

Florida requires PIP and Property Damage Liability. Knowing that keeps you from paying for coverage you were not asked for.

BUNDLE

Auto with home or renters usually discounts both.

DRIVING RECORD

Clean record, lower premium, over time.

THE VEHICLE

Performance and luxury cars price higher. Safety features and low theft rates price lower.

DEDUCTIBLE

Raising it lowers the monthly. Be able to cover it.

DISCOUNTS

Good student, defensive driving, anti-theft.

MILEAGE

Some carriers discount lower annual mileage.

CONTINUOUS COVERAGE

Gaps raise your rate later, even if you switch.

ANNUAL REVIEW

Your needs change. The policy should too.

QUESTIONS

Inflation, labor shortages and supply chain shortages have pushed repair costs up. Cars get totaled because parts are not available, which adds tow yard and rental costs. Medical costs are up. There are a lot of uninsured and underinsured drivers. And Florida litigates more than most states. Rates went up statewide, which is exactly why it is worth reshopping.

Excess medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, loss of consortium, and the cost of hiring help for things you can no longer do. To claim it you have to be injured and the other party has to be at fault. You exhaust your own primary medical first, then theirs if they have any, then your UM policy.

It matters most if you are working and your income supports your family. It matters less if you are retired and no longer the primary earner. Budget is a real factor. It is worth talking through rather than guessing.

It depends on fault, how much was paid, and your claim history by severity and frequency. Some policies include accident or claim forgiveness. If you were not at fault and the amount is close to your deductible, filing may not be worth it. Worth knowing: even calling the claims department with a question can be recorded as an occurrence. Ask your agent before you file.

Insurance is experience rated. A lapse resets your experience and moves you into a more expensive tier, even if the gap was short. Instead of lapsing, ask about suspending coverage on a vehicle while keeping state minimums with bodily injury. You stay street legal and your coverage stays continuous. Build six months, then start shopping around month five.
